Tampa Bay Softball Weekly Awards & Notable Performances - Week 1, 2024

There's so much to talk about after the opening week! Some teams are off to incredible starts that have parlayed that into Week 2 success, and some new names are already on the way to breakout seasons in the early going!

We're ready to officially release our first set of weekly awards for the 2024 season!

If you're new to Bay Made Fastpitch (a lot of parents have come up to us to introduce themselves recently!), here's how we do things here.

We split our awards into 4 different sections. Player of the Week, Pitcher of the Week and a Pitching / Offensive Honor Roll. We're also bringing back our Notable Performances section, where we get an opportunity to highlight a large number of players across our coverage area who might have missed out on the bigger awards.

As we like to say with these, 'no polls, no BS.'

Player of the Week:

Kenzie Eland, Sr. CF, Nature Coast Tech: A successful opening week for the Sharks included a monster week from Eland, who went 10-for-18 across five contests, four of those in The Villages at the Buffalo Stampede Tournament, where they went 2-2 as a team. Eland posted four multi-hit games in the opening week, and a 2-for-3 outing with an RBI helped Nature Coast Tech take down rival Hernando in a game that means a lot in the Gulf Coast 8 standings. Four runs against Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto) pushed her to six total for the week and she continued to show as a threat on the basepaths with two stolen bases.

Pitcher of the Week:

Allison Cole, Jr., Riverview (Sarasota): Seemingly out of nowhere, Cole has pushed Riverview to its best start since 2019 with a tremendous start to the year in the circle. The left-hander earned wins over Venice and Braden River as a part of a 3-0 week for the Rams. She struck out 29 in 15 innings, finishing third in the area in punchouts in the first week. Across those first two games, the southpaw allowed ten walks, six hits and just one earned run to earn her first-ever Pitcher of the Week selection.

Offensive Honor Roll:

Giavanni D’Amico, Jr. C/3B, Boca Ciega:  Boca Ciega jumped out to a 3-0 start in the first week, in part to the junior’s fabulous hitting to start the season. D’Amico notched hits in the Pirates’ first three games, finishing 7-for-10 with five driven in and two extra base hits.

Payton Cushman, Sr. CF, Calvary Christian: The 2023 Pinellas County Hitter of the Year got right back to terrorizing opposing pitching with a 7-for-9 week. She crossed home five times and homered at Lake Region – the Georgia Southern signee’s first since last April vs. Auburndale.

Aisha Duncan, Sr. 3B/OF, East Bay: For the second straight season, Duncan posted an admirable effort at the Buffalo Stampede Tournament. All in all, the senior went 7-for-13 with a double, triple, five walks and six runs scored. She also stole three bases and drove in a quartet.

Grace Shaw-Rockey, Sr. CF, Lakewood Ranch: After hitting three home runs in her first three seasons at the varsity level combined, the North Florida signee clubbed three in two games, including two in the opener against Manatee. Shaw-Rockey ended up driving eight of the Mustangs’ 11 runs.

Ava Miller, Jr. 1B, Springstead: Miller matched her double total from a season ago in one week with a pair in victories over Citrus and Hudson. She finished 7-for-8 and had back-to-back multi-hit games – her 4-for-4 performance was a clutch one to push the Eagles to an important Gulf Coast 8 win in extras over Citrus.

Pitching Honor Roll:

KK Hollenkamp, Sr., Academy of the Holy Names: It was another strong start to a campaign for the Princeton signee, who struck out 31 in 12 innings to help the Jaguars go undefeated in the season’s first week. Hollenkamp dazzled with a 19-strikeout performance against Land O’Lakes and had just one big swing – a grand slam – go against her.

Jordan Honeycutt, So., Auburndale: In her first full week as the Bloodhounds’ ace, the sophomore proved up to the challenge, earning wins over Plant City and Winter Haven. Honeycutt limited opponents to six hits, two earned runs and a walk, while she struck out 12 batters in 12 innings.

Lucy Mondok, So. P, East Lake: While East Lake’s offense was stellar to start the season, Mondok was just as good in the circle. She struck out 23 over 11 innings and gave up three hits and three walks in run-rule victories against Clearwater and Seminole.

Cassidy Masters, Sr., Plant: After some extra-inning theatrics to open the season with a win over Riverview, the Eckerd College signee was efficient and effective, needing 85 pitches to polish off a complete game one-hitter against Newsome. Masters’ 20:2 K:BB rate was one of the best in Tampa Bay in Week 1.

Avery Powers, Jr., Berkeley Prep: Across a busy, four-game week for the Buccaneers, which included a three-game trip through the South Suncoast, Powers appeared much like the freshman who took the ace role and ran with it. The junior struck out 35 in 21.2 IP and one-hit Tampa Catholic early in the week.
